Adamspic Peak description and photo - Sri Lanka: Nuwara Eliya. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Title in English - Adamspic. Photo and descriptionLocated in a picturesque area on the southern highlands of the island, this mountain has fascinated the imagination of many for centuries. As soon as it is not called: Adam's Peak (the place where Adam first set foot on earth after he was kicked out of paradise), Sri Pada (the sacred footprint left by the Buddha when he went to paradise) or Samanalakanda (the mountain of butterflies, where the butterflies die). Some believe that a huge `` footprint '' at the top of the peak (2243 m) belongs to St. Thomas - the apostle from India, or even Shiva. Whichever legend people believe, this place has been a center of pilgrimage for over 1000 years. King Parakramabahu and King of Polonnaruwa Malla Nissanka set up ambalamas (a resting place for tired pilgrims) on the mountain. Nowadays, the influx of pilgrims starts on Poya in December and continues until Vesak in May. The busiest period is in January and February. The rest of the time, the temple at the top is not used, and from May to October the peak is hidden under the clouds most of the time. During the pilgrimage season, a constant stream of pilgrims and tourists ascend to the top by countless steps. They emerge from a small settlement at Dalhousie (del dom), 33 kilometers southwest of the city of Hatton. During the season, the road is lit with lights that look very beautiful, like a snake going up the slope. You can also go for a peak and off-season hike, but then you have to use a lantern. Many pilgrims prefer to take a longer, much more tiring - but equally well-paved - the seven-hour hike from Ratnapur up Karni, as it counts more merit. From the summit of Adam's Peak, the sunrise is breathtaking. As soon as the first rays of dawn light up on the mountain, a stunningly beautiful view opens up - a crimson ball appears somewhere in the distance, illuminating the peaks of neighboring mountains and rising above the clouds. Colombo is 65 km from Adam's Peak and is clearly visible on a clear day.
