The title in English is Fort James. Photo & DescriptionFort James is a fortress located at the entrance to St. John's Harbor. The citadel was built to guard the harbor and is one of the many forts erected by English colonists in the 18th century. Fear of a French invasion during those turbulent times prompted the management of the settlement to large-scale construction. The fortress is located on a promontory overlooking the northwestern part of the city. The loopholes, several cannons, foundation and capital walls of the fort remind of the former power. The main attraction today is the wonderful panoramic view of the harbor surroundings. The fort was named after the English king James II (in English transcription - James II). Work on the implementation of the fortification system project began in 1706, most of the buildings were built in 1739. In 1773, the fort was armed with 36 cannons and had barracks at its disposal that could accommodate 75 people. In the 19th century, the need for a military garrison practically disappeared, the purpose of the fortress was cannon fireworks when entering the port of warships, as well as signals at dawn and dusk. Near the citadel there is the Fort James beach of the same name -Bich. Popular with locals and tourists alike, it often hosts beach volleyball and cricket competitions. Fort James Beach is also a popular destination for cruise passengers as it is only 5-10 minutes from the pier.
