The local history museum in the Staroflotsky barracks is located in the city of Nikolaev, Naberezhnaya street, 29. The museum is part of the complex of buildings of the Admiralty, which was erected in the middle of the XIX century. for the maritime department. The buildings of the Old Fleet barracks in the classicism style were built in 1850 by the architect K. Ackroyd and were intended for sailors of naval crews.

Each building of the Old Fleet barracks, and there were three of them, could accommodate from 1100 to 2000 people. In 1863, the entire complex was transferred to the Alexander Male Gymnasium, which was located here until the revolution. After the end of World War II, the western part of the building housed a construction college, while the remaining two buildings were run by the military.

In 2012 on the territory of the Staroflotsky barracks, work began to create a museum town. The Nikolaev Museum of Local Lore moved to the main building of the Staroflotsky Barracks, which was previously located on the territory of the Church of St. Joseph.

Today, the Nikolaev Museum of Local Lore in the Staroflotsky Barracks is one of the oldest museums in Southern Ukraine. The museum was created in 1803 as a collection of unique things of the Russian Empire. In 1913, the museum of local lore was opened, after which it became a major scientific and cultural center of the city.

More than 160 thousand exhibits are kept in the museum funds, including: rich mineral, botanical and zoological collections, antiquities from the Wild Garden tract on the territory of modern Nikolaev, as well as from the ancient Greek city of Olvia, objects of culture and everyday life from Kievan Rus to modern times. In addition, themed exhibitions, festivals and historical reconstructions are often held in the halls of the museum in the Staroflotsky barracks.
