Photo and description

St. Michael was founded in 1001 by order of Bishop Bernward. The building is a classic example of a fortified Otto-Romanesque temple. The interior of the temple is unsophisticated, only square columns separate the naves from each other.

Unique ceiling frescoes of the 12th century have been preserved - they were evacuated during the war and therefore survived. The frescoes depict the family tree of Christ - from Adam and Eve to Mary and Jesus himself. In the crypt of the temple is kept the sarcophagus of the founder, St. Bernward.
