Photo and description

Pantheon of Georgian writers and public figures Mtatsminda in Tbilisi is a necropolis where many famous writers, artists, scientists and national heroes of Georgia are buried. The necropolis is located on the slope of Mount David near the Mamadaviti Temple of David. Another name of the mountain - Mtatsminda refers to the IX century. and means "Holy Mountain". In the era of feudalism, there was already a cemetery on the slopes of the mountain, where famous personalities were buried.

The site on which the Pantheon and the church are located was formed in ancient times after the collapse of Mount David. After a while, a piece of the fallen off land was strengthened and local residents made a ledge here with soil, it was here that they erected monuments.

The official opening of the Pantheon in Tbilisi took place in 1929. and was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the death of A. Griboyedov in Iran. The necropolis is located on two terraces at different heights. As for the lower terrace, there is a small grotto on it, the upper platform is located around the church. In addition, several pre-revolutionary burials are located in the church itself.

Inspection of the Pantheon should begin with the grotto of the famous Russian poet, writer, playwright and public figure A. Griboyedov. Ivy winds on the wall of the grotto, and on the facade you can see an inscription that reads: “Here lies the ashes of A.S. Griboyedov - this monument was erected in 1832 by his wife Nina, daughter of Prince A. Chavchavadze. " The inscription was restored in 1955 from a rare photograph provided by the historian P. Ioseliani. His wife was also buried next to A. Griboyedov.
