After its opening, the museum was located in the building of the stock exchange, and in 1917 it opened in the Schonbrunn Summer Palace. The museum displays a rich collection of folk cultural heritage of Austria and neighboring countries. The main part of the collection covers the period from the 17th to the 19th century, demonstrating everyday life, folk architecture, household needs and concerns. Exhibitions and archival photographs show different types of houses, agricultural farms, interiors, furniture, utensils and other items of everyday life of that time. In addition to the interiors, the museum displays casual and festive outfits, jewelry and wedding accessories.
