Photo and description

On the island of Skopelos, in its capital of the same name, there is a small but very interesting Museum of Folk Art. The main goal of the museum is to preserve and popularize local traditions and history.

The house in which the museum is located has three floors and is made in a traditional architectural style. Previously, there was a building on this site, built in 1795, but as a result of a strong earthquake in 1963, it was almost completely destroyed. In 1971, large-scale restoration work began. Thanks to the plans and drawings of the old building, it was possible to recreate all the architectural elements characteristic of an 18th century noble house. In 1991, the Nikalaides family (owners of the house) donated it to the Skopelos municipality. In August 1992, the museum opened its doors to visitors.

The collection collected in the museum perfectly illustrates the life and life of the local population, starting from the second half of the 19th century. Here you can see furniture, ceramics and woodwork, various tools, traditional costumes, embroidery, paintings, photographs, decor items, ship models and much more. Of particular interest are the well-equipped so-called "wedding room" with a baby cradle, as well as the living room with traditional furniture and a fireplace, located on the ground floor. The basement floor houses a collection of various agricultural tools and household utensils, while the second floor houses the traditional decorative knife workshop.

The Museum of Folk Art regularly holds various exhibitions and educational programs. The museum is popular with both locals and visitors to Skopelos.
