He played in the amateur theater club at the factory. Then this amateur theater was called the Theater of Working Youth (TRAM). He started his career under his real name. In 1937, he already worked as an actor in a puppet theater, which was located at the house of pioneers in Moscow.

During the war, he voluntarily went to the front, having completed a short-term training camp in 1941 as a military training organized by the Moscow Military Engineering School. In the war, as a senior lieutenant, he commanded a company of sappers. In 1943, in the winter near Belgorod, he was seriously wounded, which entailed eleven operations. The main ones were made by the leading surgeon at the Botkin clinic, Ksenia Vincentini, who was married to the famous designer Sergei Korolev. As a result, the injured leg was saved, but after that he began to limp badly.

After the war, he got a job at the Central Puppet Theater, the head of which was S.V. Samples. Gerdt began his film career as a dubbing actor. For a long time, he remained behind the scenes, voicing various roles. Since 1983, he worked as an actor at the M.N. Ermolova.

For four years (1962-1966) Gerdt was the host of "Kinopanorama". In the 90s, he returned as a TV presenter of the author's program "Tea Club" on the Moscow TV-6 channel. On December 19, 1994, he took part in Vlad Listyev's last program "Rush Hour".

Despite the huge work behind the scenes, Zinovy Gerdt became famous, first of all, of course, his roles in films. Among his colleagues he was nicknamed "the genius of the episode." Throughout his career, he starred in 77 films and voiced 38 roles. For his creative activity, he was awarded the titles, first Honored, and then People's Artist of the RSFSR, People's Artist of the USSR, has several orders and medals.

He died on November 18, 1996 in Moscow at the age of 80.

At home, in Sebezh, on the 95th anniversary of the birth of Zinovy Gerdt, a monument to the artist was opened. The funds were collected over five years by the residents of Sebezh and fans of his talent. The sculptor Oleg Ershov became the author of the project. In the original version of the monument, Gerdt had a hat in his hand, but his wife insisted on removing it, since he never wore this headdress.

The monument was erected in the park above the lake.
