Photo and description

The monument to the famous Kalyazin saint Macarius is one of the main attractions of the city. It appeared in 2008. Funds for the creation and installation of the monument were raised by the townspeople, and in June 2008 a bronze sculpture of the patron saint Kalyazin was installed on Karl Marx Street, leading directly to the Uglich reservoir, on the most "tourist" route along which every guest of the city passes. Archbishop Viktor of Tver and Kashinsky took part in the opening ceremony.

The figure of St. Macarius of Kalyazinsky is set against the background of a stylized element of the wall of an ancient church, with a narrow loophole window, with a small dome in the upper part, which gives the entire monument an appearance similar to a chapel. In the left hand of Macarius you can see a model of the monastery, on the right is the wanderer's club. On the wall above the saint's head, the words are engraved: "Saint Father Macarius, pray to God for us." This inscription in the form of an arc goes around the image of the Trinity, which is a reminder of the Trinity monastery founded by Makarii. There are many flowers around the monument, and behind it there is a reservoir that once swallowed up the monastery of Macarius, but did not destroy its memory.

Makariy Kalyazinsky (in the world - Kozhin Matvey Vasilyevich) is a saint of the Russian Church, revered among the monks, is the founder of the Trinity-Kalyazinsky monastery. He was born about 1402 in the village of Kozhino, Kashinsky district, Tver region. His parents, Vasily and Irina Kozhin, were boyars. When Matvey turned 18, he married Elena Yakhontova, who died 3 years later. After the death of his wife, he went to the Klobukovsky monastery in the city of Kashin. Here he took monastic vows and acquired the name Macarius.

A few years later, Macarius left the monastery and decided to retire to a deserted place 18 miles from Kashin. Here, in the middle of a dense forest, he built himself a cell. Very soon 7 elders from the Klobukov monastery joined him. After some time, the Trinity Monastery appeared on the site of their hostel, which became famous even during the life of the monk.

On March 17, 1483, Macarius died. He was buried in a wooden church built by him. In the spring of 1521, during the repair work in the church, a coffin with the body of Macarius was found. The coffin was opened and, according to legend, the imperishable relics of the monk were discovered. At a church cathedral in 1547, Macarius was glorified as a saint.

In 1700, a silver shrine was made for the saint's relics. In the 1930s, after the abolition of the monastery, the relics of Macarius were brought to Tver and later transferred to the Trinity Cathedral.
