Photo and description

The famous painter, sculptor, ceramist, founder of Cubism Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, and died at the age of 91. During his long life, he left a huge number of works that are kept in private collections and museums around the world. One of the largest collections of paintings by Picasso is in the artist's museum in Barcelona. As you know, Picasso lived in Barcelona for quite a long time, and a large segment of his creative path is associated with this city. Therefore, when his friend Jaime Sebartes had the idea to create a museum of the artist from the works that were presented to him by Picasso, the artist himself suggested that it be founded in Barcelona.

The Picasso Museum opened in 1963. Initially, only 574 paintings by the artist from the Sebartis collection were exhibited there. In 1968, after the death of Sebartis, Picasso himself donated a large number of his works to the museum, which he had previously kept. To date, the museum's collection is represented by more than 3500 works of the great artist. Basically, these are the works of his early period, starting from the age of 9, the "blue" and "pink" periods, as well as some later works. Separately, I would like to note two significant paintings of his early work - "First Communion" (1896) and "Science and Mercy" (1897). The pearls of the collection are also the paintings "The Dancer" and "The Harlequin", for the creation of which Picasso was inspired by the Russian ballet, with which he spent a lot of time in Paris. And of course, the most significant in his collection is a series of 59 interpretations of Velazquez's masterpieces - the famous "Meninas".

The Picasso Museum is located in the city center, in the old palace of Berenguer d'Aguilar in the Gothic Quarter. Today it occupies the premises of 5 medieval Gothic mansions located on Moncada Street. It is the most visited museum in Barcelona.
