Photo and description

The Cathedral of Simeon Verkhotursky is a functioning cathedral in the city of Chelyabinsk. Residents of the Urals, including Chelyabinsk residents, treated the righteous Simeon Verkhotursky with great love. The construction of a stone church at the city cemetery in Chelyabinsk began in 1873. 10 years later the cemetery was abolished, but the temple remained and was consecrated in honor of St. Simeon of Verkhotursky.

The church was a small rectangular white building with a semicircular altar ledge. The central entrance to the temple was on the west side. The ringing tier of the hipped-roof bell tower towering above the narthex is crowned with a small dome. In 1889, during a violent storm, the church bell tower fell, damaging the roof of the building. The restoration of the temple was carried out by the tradesman P.M. Kutyrev, with funds, donated by the famous benefactor - P.I. Ilyin. The restoration work was fully completed in May 1890.

In the spring of 1922, St. Simeon's Church was leased to the Renovationist community. It was the only temple in Chelyabinsk, which remained intact by 1930.

During the Great Patriotic War, the church became the center of the patriotic work of believers and Orthodox clergy. In the second half of the XX century. The Simeon Church has been reconstructed several times. In 1947-1960. a small Kazan side-chapel was added to the temple, and several outbuildings and a brick fence appeared on its territory. By 1977, the area of the church increased due to the expansion of the vestibule, the altar part and side extensions. In 1986, the reconstruction of the temple began, which ended in 1990. Even before the end of reconstruction work in 1989, the only small church operating in Chelyabinsk received the status of a cathedral. The interior of the temple was painted in an academic manner by Moscow artists.

In recent years, a huge amount of repair and construction work has been carried out in the Cathedral of Simeon of Verkhoturye, which significantly affected the internal and external appearance of the temple. Only the domes and the bell tower have survived from the old building.
