Photo and description

The highest building in Bydgoszcz is considered to be the Church of St. Andrzej Boboli, which is located right in the city center on Koscelecki Square. Its bell tower, erected in 1903, reaches 75 meters and is visible from many city streets. In principle, the spire of the temple tower can serve as a good landmark if you accidentally get lost in the city.

The temple, whose patron is considered a Jesuit monk, martyr Andrzej Bobola, who lived in the late 16th - first half of the 17th century, was erected in the period from 1901 to 1904 on the site of an older church.

In 1787, a church was built on the foundations that remained from the castle that once belonged to King Casimir the Great, which existed until the beginning of the 20th century. Over time, it decayed to such an extent which could no longer be restored, so it was decided to demolish it. To work on the new church, an architect from Berlin, Heinrich Seeeling, was invited, who had previously designed the local city theater, and some residential buildings, and the Evangelical Church of Christ the Savior.

In 1945-1946, a parish craft school worked in the building of the church. The subsequent renovation of the church was carried out under the leadership of the Jesuits, who returned to Bydgoszcz after 166 years of absence. They took care of the complete renovation of the interior of the church. At the same time, the main altar was decorated with the image of the Mother of God of Ostrobramskaya.

By its appearance, the Church of St.Andrzej Boboli resembles German Protestant churches of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, built in the Gothic style. The monumentality and grandeur of the building is emphasized by a massive tower and a stone portal, at which visitors are greeted by two sculptures of kneeling angels.
