St. Nicholas Cathedral was built in Dushanbe at the end of 1943. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many were forced to leave the country and divine services in the church were held irregularly.

The first reconstruction with the replacement of capital elements was started in 2005 and lasted six years. After the renovation of the ceilings and roofs, new domes were installed, the floors and window blocks were replaced, the main altar was rebuilt and an iconostasis made of carved marble was installed. The changes also affected the entire interior decoration. New icons made of lapis lazuli were delivered to the church, and the wall behind the altar of the main nave was decorated with a panel made of semiprecious stones - "The Last Supper", and the walls - bas-reliefs depicting Jesus Christ and the Madonna and Child. Besides, carried out a complete redevelopment of the adjacent territory, erected a bell tower, installed several gazebos and benches for rest, laid paths and laid out flower beds.

Next to St. Nicholas Cathedral is the main city cemetery, which has been functioning since 1937. Prominent figures of culture, science and social life of Tajikistan, as well as people of all nationalities, are buried here, although the cemetery is popularly known as "Russian".
