Photo and description

The Temple of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the town of Bianzano in the province of Bergamo. He stands alone and somehow even isolated in an open space far from residential urban buildings. A vast panorama opens from this place.

Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1234 and subsequently restored in 1727, as evidenced by a memorial stone placed on the right wall at the entrance to the temple. For almost four centuries - from 1234 to 1614 - this church bore the title of a parish church.

The bell tower of the church dates back to the second half of the 18th century - it has a square shape and is divided into three parts with belts - a special architectural detail. The altar, made around 1690 by master Fantoni, is itself a small temple. Finally, around the church of Santa Maria Assunta, you can see many tombs dating from the 13th-18th centuries.

On the right wall of the temple there is a statue "Signur & ugrave;" depicting the suffering Christ, whose face remains calm and humble. The population of Bianzano especially reveres this statue - on the third Sunday in July, it participates in a religious procession during the celebration of Signur & ugrave;. The origins of this solemn ceremony, which has been celebrated since the Second World War and is intended to receive the protection of Christ the Redeemer for local residents, can be traced back to legend. According to legend, when the Signur & ugrave; was first placed on the wall of Santa Maria Assunta, it caused fear and alarm among believers, especially children. Then it was decided to bury the statue in an open place. However, while the "funeral procession" was not yet completed, a terrible hurricane suddenly swooped in, which destroyed the entire crop. Someone suggested digging up the Signur & ugrave;, and when that was done, the sky immediately cleared up. And it all happened on the third Sunday in July.
