Photo and description

The Church of Santa Anna ai Monti, located in the Ligurian town of Alassio on Via Giulia Augusta, is probably one of the first sacred buildings in the city, built here in 940 by monks -Benedictines from the island of Gallinara. It served as the parish church of Alassio until 1507.

In Santa Anna ai Monti, services were held until the end of the 18th century, when during the reign of Napoleon it was sold to private hands and turned into a stable. Then the building fell into decay and practically turned into ruins. Only in 1968-70s large-scale restoration work was carried out in the church, after which it was re-consecrated.

During the restoration, interesting ancient frescoes were discovered, the largest of which is located on the left wall of the portico and depicts Christ Pantokrator, enclosed in a walnut shell. To the right of it are images of saints, and to the left, in the nave, fragments of the "Deliverance of Angels" and, probably, images of damned people in hell are preserved. At the very top of the facade of Santa Anna ai Monti, you can see a fragment of the figure of Saint Anne and two more faces. These frescoes are supposedly dated back to the late 15th century.

Inside, the church has a trapezoidal nave that tapers from the facade to a square apse, preceded by a rectangular portico. In front of the apse, on the left, a small rectangular space is visible, which is probably left over from a previous construction from the Roman period.

Today, the Church of Santa Anna ai Monti is still in private hands and, unfortunately, the preservation of the building raises serious concerns.
