Photo and description

The monument to the hussars of the Kiev regiment is one of the sights of Sevastopol. The Kiev hussar regiment took part in the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. in Balaklava, Inkerman and Alma battles. The hussars were especially noted in the Balaklava battle, which took place on October 13, 1854. At the place where the battles took place, on a small hill, a monument to the hussars of the Kiev regiment was erected on the 50th anniversary of the defense.

In February 1932, a specially created commission decided to demolish the monument “as of little importance” (according to other sources, it was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War). During excavations carried out in 2002, archaeologists discovered part of the foundation, fragments of a cast-iron eagle and blocks. The monument was restored in September 2004, to the 150th anniversary of the defense of the city of Sevastopol in the Crimean War. The author of the restoration project was the Kiev architect Y. Lisitsky. The funds for the reconstruction were allocated by the Kiev City Council.

The new monument was erected in a different place - on a hill where one of the English redoubts was located, which in 1854-1856 covered Balaklava, and a little lower, about 75 meters from the Sevastopol-Yalta highway ... The restored monument is as close as possible to the original.

The gray granite obelisk was erected on a small artificial hill, on a two-stage base. The monument topped with a cast-iron double-headed eagle, which sits on four cast-iron cannonballs, is surrounded by a fence. There are two memorial plaques on the monument with inscriptions that read: “To the valiant ranks,
