Photo and description

In Sevastopol on Bolshaya Morskaya street there is the Intercession Cathedral. This temple has five domes and is of the basilica type. It was built in 1905. Researchers define the architectural style of the temple as pseudo-Russian. V. Feldman is a well-known architect, he designed this religious building.

For the construction of the cathedral, Crimean and Inkerman stone was specially brought, hewn it, and it became the main building material. Galvanized shingles were used for the domes, and the roof was made from it. Galvanized steel was used for the rest of the roof. The building reaches a height of thirty-seven meters.

The thrones of the cathedral are dedicated to the following saints: Panteylemon - healer and great martyr, the Protection of the Virgin, Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sophia, Prince Vladimir, to the apostles Peter and Paul, Seraphim of Sarov.

The domes are decorated with crosses with crescents. Such symbols can be interpreted in different ways. The crescent moon is seen as a ship driven by the helmsman Christ. At the same time, the crescent moon can be perceived as an anchor of hope. There is a point of view that this is an ancient serpent, an enemy under the feet of Christ. And there is also an opinion that the crescent can be like a Bethlehem cradle, and like a Eucharistic cup where the body of Christ lies.

The lancet vault rises above the main dome. The vault is surrounded by four dodecahedral turrets. There is a bell tower on the western side of the temple, it is connected to the main building. The bell tower is ten meters below the church.

During the war, the cathedral was almost completely destroyed. The south side-chapel suffered, it turned into ruins. Later, the church was partially restored. Services in the cathedral were held until 1962. Then these premises were given for the city archive and the gymnasium.

In 1992, part of the cathedral - the north side-altar - was returned to believers. It was consecrated in the name of Saint Panteleimon. The temple was completely vacated only by 1994.

Today it is a functioning cathedral. Services are held here. Gilding glows on five domes. The main relic in the church is dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. This is a mosaic type icon. It can be seen from Bolshaya Morskaya Street.

Restoration work continues in the temple to this day.
