Photo and description

Many people know that the history of the city of Murmansk began with the development of a commercial seaport, the idea of creating which appeared in the second half of the 19th century, although it was only possible after several decades. In winter, in December 1914, the Russian government decided to build a large steel highway that ran from Petrograd to the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula. Simultaneously with the construction of the railway, the port began to be erected.

In 1915, the first construction work of the future port began, which developed at a particularly rapid pace, so the first temporary pier and various structures were soon built. From the very beginning of its existence, the port was actively working. From the middle of 1915, not far from the pile-trestle pier, the first unloading of the steamer, which arrived in these parts from New York, took place. Soon after this event, the second February Revolution rolled over Russia, which is why in April 1917 only the mortgaged city completely lost the Romanov prefix and became Murmansk.

The Murmansk commercial seaport played a significant role during the Great Patriotic War, despite the fact that the enemy aircraft made every attempt to shut down the port. In the workplace, 103 port workers died while performing their duties, but still the intended government business did not slow down. Allied convoys were delivered to the port in large streams, which brought in urgently needed weapons at that time, as well as military strategic materials. During 1941-1945, the port workers unloaded more than three hundred types of transport, and also processed about 2 million tons of necessary military-economic cargo, which greatly helped our country to defeat the Nazis.

Exactly. For this reason, it was completely logical that in the summer of 1945 a decision was made to perpetuate the memory of all the perished port workers, moreover, this year marks 30 years since the construction of the trade sea route in the city of Murmansk. This kind of order was given by the first head of the port, L.P. Novosadov. In connection with the celebration of the anniversary date, a large commemorative sign was erected, which was a kind of stylized lighthouse built of concrete and fenced with thick chains. The elevated lighthouse tower has two plates made of metal: on the top there is an inscription about the date of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, and on the second - an inscription telling that a geodetic mark was formed at this place in June 1915, which became the beginning in the process of exploration work on the construction of a commercial seaport in the city of Murmansk ... It is worth noting that this monument is not distinguished by its incredible majesty, but nevertheless it reminds of the times of that past era. An unprecedented severity, simplicity and incredible calm can be traced in the appearance of the entire monument, which clearly symbolizes the inextinguishable confidence of the Russian people, who won the Great Patriotic War, but despite everything, they are ready to go and develop further. It is for this reason that the monument is made in the form of a lighthouse, which shows ships the way to the harbor.

In the summer of July 2, 1945, on a large square located in front of the port administration building, a solemn ceremony was held to unveil a monument in honor of the blessed memory of all the dead port workers. This monument became the very first in Murmansk, which became a dedication to the victims of the war and was an obelisk with four sides, the height of which reaches 6 m. The plaque on the monument had an inscription dedicated to “Port workers who gave their lives for the good of the country during the Great Patriotic War. war ", after which the entire list of the dead people is given. In 1967, a new monument was built, dedicated to all workers of the port, which was made according to the project of the architect A.F. Antonov. and Glukhikh G.A. The monument is a stele directed into the sky, the height of which reaches 11 meters and which is especially close to many residents of the city of Murmansk.
