Trullo are peasant residential buildings made of roughly cut limestone blocks, erected in a unique way - with the help of dry masonry. Trullos are also distinguished by their pyramidal, domed or conical roofs. Moreover, there are "trullo males" and "trullo females": male trullos have a poppy seed - pinaccolo. By the way, the very name "trullo" comes from the Latin word "trulla", which means "dome". A similar construction technology is still used in Apulia, although it is forbidden to build a trullo. There are about 20 thousand such buildings, the first mention of which dates back to the 11th century!

Alberobello in Trullo today houses not only residential buildings, but also shops, restaurants, hotels, and even religious institutions. Hospitable hosts are always happy to guide visitors to their unique houses and tell the story of their appearance. According to legend, during the Spanish rule on the Apennine peninsula, feudal lords did not have the right to build any serious structures on their land without the permission of the king. Trullo, on the other hand, before the visit of the "inspection" could be easily disassembled with the help of only three horses - directed in different directions, they removed a stone from the base of the roof, and the whole house folded into a pile of unremarkable boulders. Today, trullo has become fashionable to buy as a summer residence or summer residence.

The largest trullo of Alberobello is the so-called Trullo Sovrano, built by the Perth family in the middle of the 18th century. Today, this two-story building is occupied by a museum, furnished in accordance with the tastes of that era. In summer, it hosts various cultural events - theatrical performances, concerts of small musical groups, evenings of culture and poetry, etc.

And between the quarter of Alberobello called Ayia Piccola and Piazza del Popolo is the city's largest complex of adjoining trullos, the oldest of which was built in the 18th century. This residential complex is called Casa Pezzolla after the last owners. In 1986, it was bought by the municipality of Alberobello and restored. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the history of these places, traditions and folklore.
