Photo and description

The list of exploits of the famous Russian commander Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov is so great that a rare person is able to remember them all. But everyone has heard about his crossing the Alps. It happened in 1799, when the Russian army defeated the French troops, and this became possible only thanks to the strategic talent of Suvorov.

In particular, no one imagined that such a huge army would be able to pass where there was no road in principle. The crucial battle took place in the area of the so-called Devil's Bridge, and it was she who determined the course of further battles and the victory of the Russian troops. Neither harsh weather conditions, nor lack of provisions and normal clothing broke the spirit of the army.

According to statistics, the French army lost about 5,000 soldiers and more than a thousand were taken prisoner, while the losses among the Russian military amounted to 650 people. Suvorov not only led the soldiers out of the encirclement, but led them out as victors.

By the centenary of this great event in 1899, the tsarist government asked Switzerland for permission to erect a monument to the generalissimo, and the gorge near the Devil's Bridge was considered the most suitable place for it.

The stone cross carved into the rock is a kind of tribute to the memory of the great commander, as well as the soldiers who died and survived in this terrible battle. Currently, the rock with the monument and the road leading to them are owned by the Russian Federation.
