Photo and description

In Sofia, one of the main attractions telling about the history of a country forced to fight for its independence for a long time is the monument to the Unknown Soldier. This monument, erected in memory of the fallen Bulgarian soldiers during the Ottoman occupation, is located on St. Alexander Nevsky, directly next to the Hagia Sophia. Its grand opening took place in the 1980s. The solemn ceremony, timed to coincide with the opening day of the monument, was accompanied by another important event on a national scale - the celebration of the 1300th anniversary of the creation of the First Bulgarian Kingdom.

This monument is a sign of gratitude of every citizen of the country to the soldiers who took part in the battles for their homeland. The base of the building is decorated with engraved lines from a poem by Ivan Vazov, the famous poet of Bulgaria. The author dedicated this small passage to all the heroes who died tragically defending their homeland.

It is no coincidence that the lion of bronze installed on a pedestal - the animal has long been considered a symbol of the country. Next to the lion there was a place for urns with earth, which had been brought from the battle sites at Shipka and Stara Zagora. An integral part of the composition is the eternal flame.

The monument regularly hosts events and ceremonies in memory of the heroic compatriots who died.
