Photo and description

One of the best museums in Madrid - the National Archaeological Museum of Spain - is located on Serrano Street near Columbus Square. The museum occupies a part of the building of the Palace of Libraries and Museums, the National Library is also located here and until recently the Museum of Modern Art was located.

The museum was opened in 1867 with the assistance of Queen Isabella II. The museum was founded with the aim of storing and organizing a permanent exhibition of accumulated historical, ethnographic and cultural values. Initially, the museum was located in an old mansion on Embahadores street, and in 1895 its collections were transferred to the current Palace of Libraries and Museums.

Today, the museum exhibits collections of archaeological artifacts, numismatics, historical finds, objects of ancient arts. A large collection here is dedicated to the history of the Iberian Peninsula, from ancient times to the present day. Among the many exhibits on display, you can see a masterfully crafted replica of the Altamira caves located in the museum's courtyard, which is a model of Paleolithic rock carvings. In the museum, you can also see three ancient sculptures - "Lady from Elche", dating back to the 4th century BC, "Lady-tabernacle" and "Lady from Basa". The museum also displays many exhibits relating to the history of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In one of the halls of the museum, you can see the mystical sarcophagus of Amemenhat.

I would like to note the scale of the museum - the number of exhibits exhibited within its walls reaches a million.
