Photo and description

On the picturesque shore of the lake, in the center of Kaliningrad, there is the only Russian Amber Museum. The exposition of the museum is located on three floors of the Don fortress tower, built in the middle of the nineteenth century and serving as a defensive structure of the old Konigsberg. The building of the museum went down in history in April 1945, when after the end of the assault on Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad), a red banner was hoisted on the tower.

The Amber Museum was opened in 1979 as a branch of the Kaliningrad History and Art Museum and at that time was the only one in the world, whose collection was completely devoted to the unique creation of nature - amber. The decision to create a museum of natural minerals in Kaliningrad was not accidental; it is in the bowels of this land that most of the world's amber reserves are located, and also within the city is the largest stone processing plant in Russia.

Today, the museum's exposition is housed in 28 spacious halls with a total area of more than a thousand square meters and has more than 140 thousand storage units. The scientific and natural section of the museum presents a collection of amber samples of various colors, weight and transparency. This collection includes the largest amber in Russia - `` Sun Stone '', weighing four kilograms two hundred and eighty grams. Most of the collection is represented by samples of amber with fragments of fauna and flora, trapped 50 million years ago in a viscous resin and survived to this day in the form of a stone.

The cultural and historical section is dedicated to the Konigsberg amber manufactory, where unique household items and jewelry are presented, made of amber from the 4th millennium BC up to the present day. The exposition of the museum is complemented by works by contemporary artists from Japan, France, USA, Poland, Denmark, Germany and Russia, including exclusive household items, small plastic and jewelry. The pride of the Kaliningrad Amber Museum is the works of European masters of the seventeenth century, donated in 1978 by the Armory Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin, which recreate fragments of the Amber Room.
