Photo and description

In the center of Kaliningrad, not far from the Lower Pond, there is the main building of the Historical and Art Museum, founded in August 1946. Initially, the museum was organized as a local history museum and did not have its own building, but over the years it was actively developing and a fairly serious art collection was formed.

Today, the oldest museum in the region is located on three floors of a historic building, where eleven exhibition halls are located on 3500 square meters and more than 120 thousand exhibits are presented to visitors. The rich museum collection introduces the history, nature, geographical features of the region, as well as works of art by Russian and foreign artists. The most valuable museum collections are: paleontological collection of the Geological Museum of Konigsberg, a collection of natural specimens from amber, a numismatic collection - a collection and a unique collection of reference publications in Russian and German.

The branches of the Historical and Art Museum are: an open exposition `` Ruins of the Royal Castle '', Fort No. 5, the command post of the 43rd Army in the village of Kholmogorovka, the Kristionas Donelaitis Museum in the Chistye Prudy village, a sculpture park on the Kneiphof island and the Blindage Museum, formerly the command post of the Konigsberg Fortress.

In 1991, the Regional History and Art Museum moved to the historic building of the former city concert hall Stadthalle, where it is located to this day. The concert hall was built in 1912 by the Berlin architect Richard Seeel. During World War II, the building was destroyed and remained in ruins until the early 1980s. In 1986, the Stadthalle was restored according to drawings and reconstructed specifically for a museum.

In addition to sightseeing tours, the museum hosts thematic classes and various programs on environmental education, local history and archeology. For children, it will be interesting to visit creative activities, such as: drawing in the style of rock painting, sculpting clay dishes and participating in archaeological excavations.
