Photo and description

The Transfiguration Cathedral of the city of Vinnitsa is the main temple in the Vinnitsa diocese of the UOC, and is also a monument of architecture and urban planning of national importance. The temple is located in the historical center of the city at Soborna Street, 23. The cathedral was built in the 18th century as a Dominican church designed by the Italian architect. Paolo Fontana.

After the suppression of the Polish uprising against the Russian Empire in 1830, the Dominican monastery in Vinnitsa was liquidated, and its premises in 1832 transferred to the subordination of the Orthodox clergy, after which the cathedral was consecrated as an Orthodox church, and the church was rebuilt for an Orthodox cathedral.

The twentieth century was perhaps the most difficult in the fate of the Transfiguration Cathedral. It was closed twice, for the first time in 1930. - when the temple was turned into a warehouse, the second time - when a gym was located in the church. Three domes of the cathedral were removed, and later the towers were also demolished. In the 80s, the church housed a hall for organ and chamber music, which existed until 1990, and then the regional and city authorities again transferred the cathedral to the Church.

The cathedral was built of bricks, three-nave, six-pillar, with a rectangular sacristy. Cells are attached to it. The facades are made in the Baroque style. In the interior of the temple, one can see unique preserved fragments of wall paintings from the 18th century. The cathedral has a Sunday school for children and adults, a library with church literature, youth and children's choirs, as well as an Orthodox theater studio.

The Transfiguration Cathedral is a bright decoration of Vinnitsa, it is the hallmark of its city.
