Photo and description

The Lama Bianca nature reserve was founded in 1987 on an area of 1407 hectares. The difference in elevation in the reserve is about 1500 meters - from the top of Monte Amaro with a height of 2795 meters to the bottom of the Valle d'Orta. Geographically, the reserve belongs to the municipality of Sant Eufemia a Maiella in the province of Pescara in the Italian region of Abruzzo. And "Lama Bianca" borders on the Vallone del Orfento nature reserve and the "Mayella" national park.

Typical Apennine vegetation in the Lama Bianca nature reserve ranges from beech forests located at an altitude of one and a half thousand meters, to the so-called "Lunars" on the highest plateaus of the Mayella massif. Of particular scientific and natural value are endemic plants, that is, those that are found only in a certain territory, and a variety of shrubs and herbs. In the undergrowth of the beech forest and the thickets of mountain pine, which cover many hundreds of hectares of the reserve, you can see gentian, fire and curly lilies and wild peonies. And on the highest rocks there are beautiful Alpine edelweiss.

Among the wild animals that have found shelter in the Lama Bianca nature reserve, whose territory is only slightly affected by human activity, there are brown bears and Apennine wolves, red deer and roe deer, Abruzzo chamois and an unimaginable number of bird species, from which stands out, first of all, the European stone partridge.

There are many hiking and cycling trails throughout the reserve, and some trails have been designed specifically for people with disabilities.
