In April 2008, Oslo hosted the grand opening of the National Opera House, the largest cultural center built over the past 700 years. At the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, an international jury recognized the theater building as an object of world importance.

The new opera building, designed by the architectural firm Snohetta, is located near the stock exchange and central station and covers an area equal to a football field.
