Photo and description

The city of Amaranti is located on a hillside along the banks of the Tamega River, and impresses with a huge number of old mansions that are located in the city. Amaranti is also famous for the fact that one of the leading postmodernist painters of the 20th century in Portugal, Amadeus de Souza-Cardoso, was born in it, and a museum was opened in his honor in the city, which houses a collection of works by this artist.

The museum is located in the gallery of the old monastery church of Saint Goncalo and was founded in 1947 by Albano Sardoeira in order to show the history of the city and tell about the famous artists and writers of Amaranti. Such famous personalities include the painter Antonio Carneiro, who was also born in Amaranti, and the poet Teixeira de Pashoes. Outside the museum there is a park overlooking the Tamega River, where there is a monument of Teixeira de Pashoes, cast in bronze.

The museum exhibits a permanent collection of contemporary art by Portuguese artists, as well as the most famous works of Antonio Carneiro and Amadeus de Souza-Cardoso. Amadeus de Souza-Cardoso received his architectural education at the Academy of Arts in Lisbon. A year later, he left for France, where he studied at various academies, and also met many famous artists of the early twentieth century, who influenced his work. The artist held his exhibitions almost all over the world and became famous at a fairly young age. With the outbreak of World War I, he returned to Portugal, where he continued to paint. Unfortunately, at the age of 30, Amadeus de Souza-Cardoso died of an illness.
