Photo and description

The parish Roman Catholic church in St. Gilgen was consecrated in honor of St. Egidius. It is located east of the city center, on the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, and is surrounded by an old cemetery. For the first time we see mention of her in archival documents of 1376. In the 15th century, the old dilapidated building, which had long been in need of renovation, was restored, which, however, did not save it from subsequent demolition. The current sacred building dates back to 1767. The temple was consecrated in honor of Saint Egidius in 1769. In 1856, he received the status of a parish church. The temple was repaired several times. The interior was renovated in the middle of the 20th century.

The Church of St. Egidius consists of a late baroque nave and a gothic western tower, the superstructure of which was made in 1705 in a baroque manner. The tower appeared in the XIV century. It has an open gallery above the clock and is topped by a double original dome. It rests on a square base. On the facade of the tower you can see the numbers "1425", indicating the year, probably of some kind of renovation.

In the southern part of the church of St. Egidius there is a chapel, which was built over the crypt. In 1879, Prince Wrede from the Huttenstein Castle was buried here.

The interior of the temple is richly decorated in the late Baroque style. Many decorative details in it are made of marble and wood. The vaulted paintings, decorated with stucco, were probably made by the artist Josef Veer in 1770 and restored in the second half of the 20th century. The altar was completed in 1768.
