Photo and description

The Tolvojarvi area is located within the Suojarvi administrative district on the border with Finland. The Finns established a national park on this territory in 1919. The park ceased to exist by 1939, as the lands became part of the USSR. However, the idea of creating a protected area on the territory of Tolvojarvi was expressed in 1992 by the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The park and its nature are phenomenal. Of all the reservoirs, lakes predominate here. Tolvojarvskie lakes are a rare network of reservoirs in natural terms. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that with a strong wind and the smallest difference in heights, the flow of water from lake to lake is observed. The park is located on two types of middle taiga landscape. They are inhabited by representatives of the middle taiga fauna: brown bear, white hare, wolf, fox, marten, squirrel, lynx, wood grouse, elk. There are northern animals: wolverine and reindeer.

There are usually many owls and daytime birds of prey, black-throated loon and black-throated loon nest with a high density. There are rarities of the Arctic fauna - Arctic tern, golden plover, turukhtan. There is a large breeding ground for the goose and whooper swan. It is often possible to observe the passage of a mass of waterfowl. The reserve is home to 170 species of the animal world. There are 41 species of vulnerable and rare animals. 28 of them are included in the Red Book.

The flora is small. The flora of the reserve is dominated by typical taiga species. All species are common in Karelia, forming the basis of the vegetation cover. In " Tolvojarvi " southern species are common, such as bracken, forest reed, May lily of the valley, black alder, fern. Of the northern species, Swedish derain is known - a plant with large inedible dark red berries. The plant ripens with lingonberries and can mislead the collector.

Of interest in the heated shallow waters of lakes are aquatic small spore-like semi-eared plants: the thinnest and lacustrine. Dortman's lobelia can often be found next to them. These species are included in the Karelian and Russian Red Data Books and are characteristic of lakes with clean water. They can disappear without a trace when water bodies are polluted.

Woody plants are wild types of roses, fragrant poplar, willow spirea, Siberian larch (in places where it grows there are abundant undergrowth). Herbaceous perennials became feral: catchment, elder-leaved valerian, garden strawberries, blue cyanosis. The reserve has concentrated food and medicinal plant raw materials. In some years, cloudberries, cranberries, blueberries give abundant harvests, and blueberries and lingonberries in the forests.

Typical landscapes with undrained wetlands are a factor in the uniqueness of Tolvojarvi Park. The Lehtisensuo bog is of great interest. There is a provision according to which in this part of the park you can pick berries and mushrooms, fishing is allowed. The dignity of pine landscapes is especially high. The pine forests of the park divide three generations of trees: 25–45 years old, 95–115 years old and even 245–250 years old.

An attractive tourist site of the park is the Tolvojoki River, with rapids and a waterfall. There are several hiking trails in the park. One of them runs along the shores of Lake Tolvojarvskoye and stone (ozovy) ridges. The height of some ridges in the area of the lake exceeds 16-20 meters, and their length is from 4.6 to 16 km. The touristic system is one of the interesting sights and is a water-landscape ridge.

The routes of the park-reserve are designed in such a way that you can fully allow you to get acquainted with the natural features of a truly amazing corner of Karelia. Lakes, islets and channels between them with high banks covered with pine trees leave an indelible impression and determine the cognitive value of Tolvojarvi. In the park, in specially designated places, there are equipped places for daytime relaxation and a fireplace.

Tolvajarvi territory is a beautiful part of the national park, where the traveler can admire the beauty of nature.
