Photo and descriptionThe Lviv Art Gallery is one of the largest and richest art collections in Ukraine. To date, the museum has collected about 62 thousand samples of world and national art. Here you can admire the creations of famous artists, sculptors, artisans from antiquity to our time. The most valuable are exhibits dedicated to European art, samples of Lviv sculpture, icons and antique furniture. The building of the museum was built under the direction of the architect F. Pokutinsky, in 1873. According to the architect, the building has the shape of the English letter F and was built in the neo-Renaissance style. Initially it was a country palace of wealthy aristocrats, but in 1914 it was rebuilt for the needs of the museum. The core of the museum's collection is made up of works by Jan Matejko, acquired by the city magistrate from budget funds. However, a more significant addition to the museum was the collection of the landowner Yakovich, which he donated to the fund in 1907. This date is considered the time when the museum was founded. The museum developed and replenished, there were tragic events in its history. So during the Second World War, 225 of the most valuable exhibits were removed from the museum to Germany. After the war, thanks to cooperation with many museums around the world, the collection was replenished and in 1962 amounted to 11 thousand exhibits.
