Photo and descriptionThe museum is located in the eastern wing of the Belem Palace and houses one of the finest carriage collections in Europe. The collection of Portuguese, Spanish, Austrian, French and Italian carriages, made in the 17th-19th centuries, consists of a variety of pieces. One of the oldest carriages belonged to Philip II of Spain - wooden, upholstered in red leather. Later carriages became more and more luxurious. For example, five-ton carriages, trimmed with plush and decorated with gilded human-size statues, which belonged to the Portuguese ambassador to the Vatican. The museum also exhibits several royal carriages, two-wheeled convertibles, landauses and phaetons.
