The collection of the Museum of Ancient Art is housed in a 17th century palace built for the family of the Counts of Alvor. In 1770, the building was acquired by the Marquis de Pombal, and the museum opened here in 1884.

On the ground floor there are paintings by European artists of the XIV-XIX centuries, as well as furniture and decorative art. On the second floor, you can see objects of oriental and African art, including Chinese and Portuguese ceramics, gold and silver products, and jewelry. The third floor displays paintings and sculptures by Portuguese masters.
