Museum of Contemporary Arts description and photos - Macedonia: Skopje. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Museum of Contemporary Arts. Photo and descriptionThe Museum of Modern Art is located on the Calais hill near the fortress of the same name. It was built in 1969-1970 in a modern style by a group of Polish architects "Tigers". The construction was sponsored by the Polish government. Today, the Museum of Contemporary Art is the only institution in the country that collects and processes information about Macedonian art. The museum building has recently been closed for renovation. It ended in 2014, which was celebrated with the exhibition “Solidarity - an unfinished project.” The history of the Skopje Museum of Contemporary Art is rather unusual. As you know, a disaster struck the city in 1963 - more than 70% of all city buildings were damaged by the earthquake. To support local residents, international organizations, museums from all over the world and individuals began to send works of artists of the 20th century to Skopje as a gift. Over time, there were so many paintings that on February 11, 1964, the city authorities announced the creation of a new museum. From 1966 to 1970, the paintings were exhibited in a rented gallery, and then were moved to a new museum building. Its area is more than 5 thousand square meters. It consists of three combined buildings, in which there was a place for temporary and permanent exhibitions, a lecture hall, a library, archives, etc. The space around the museum is used for creative projects: exhibitions of sculptures and installations are often held here. The museum hosts debates, discussions with artists, film screenings and other similar events.
