One of the largest archaeological and historical museums in Bulgaria is located in the city of Varna. Located at 41 Maria Luisa Boulevard. The area of the Archaeological Museum is more than two thousand square meters. meters, on which there are exhibition halls, a scientific library, an archive, classrooms, storage and a cozy courtyard.

The museum's exposition includes more than 50 thousand exhibits that illustrate the history of the Black Sea region and the Balkans from the Paleolithic period to the late the middle ages. Thematically, the exhibits of the museum are divided into four groups: Prehistory - from the Paleolithic to the culture of early Thrace; Antiquity - the founding of Varna, Varna during the Hellenistic period, Varna during the Roman conquests and early Christian Varna; Middle Ages - First and Second Bulgarian Kingdoms; Church art - church utensils, icons and vestments.

The initiator of the creation of the museum in 1866 was the Varna Archaeological Society. Initially, the museum occupied part of the Varna library, but in 1898 it moved to a new building in the neo-Renaissance style, built by the architect Petko Mamchilov. On June 11, 1906, the museum opened its doors to its first visitors.

The pride of the Archaeological Museum is a magnificent collection of gold items of the 6th millennium BC, found in one of the necropolises near Varna. There are also sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, tools, and cult objects from the Roman, Thracian and Greek periods of history. The wonderful collection of 19th century icons is also noteworthy.
