Photo and description

In the middle of the swamp there is a chapel above the spring that gives rise to the great Russian Volga river. The area around the source of the Volga is a historical monument and a natural monument; in 1972 it was declared a state reserve. Today the total area of the reserve is 7000 hectares.

The source of the Volga has long been considered a holy place. Near the source there are the red-stone Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral and the wooden Nikolskaya Church. The men's Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya desert, opened in 1649 by order of Alexei Mikhailovich, was very famous, but it never gained strength due to the distance of the main roads. At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a female Olginsky monastery here.
