Photo and description

The Church of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara is an Orthodox church in Kazan. The exact date of its construction is unknown. Presumably it was built in the late 1700s. Its construction dates back to the time of the restoration of the city after the devastation of the Pugachevites. It is believed that the church was rebuilt from a house owned by Vice Governor Kudryavtsev. The architect of the original church is unknown. From old photographs you can see that the temple was built in the style of classicism.

Presumably, at the beginning, the church could have existed at the Arsk cemetery. The Varvara Church became a parish after the cemetery had its own church in the name of the Yaroslavl Miracle Workers.

In the 19th century, the place where the Varvara Church stood was the outskirts of the city. She stood on the famous Siberian highway. We passed by the temple along the Siberian tract and entered the temple of A.N. Radishchev, N.G. Chernyshevsky, V.G. Korolenko and A.I. Herzen.

At the beginning of the nine hundredths (1901 - 1907) a new church was built at the expense of parishioners, architect Malinovsky. In its architecture, parts of the old temple of the 18th century were visible. The style of the new church was defined as "Russian". The outward resemblance of the new church to the church of Euthymius the Great and Tikhon of Zadonsky in the Seven Lake desert is undeniable; they were also built by Malinovsky. All buildings of Malinovsky are characterized by good acoustics and coziness of interiors.

The walls of the Church of Varvara remember many famous people. Young Fyodor Chaliapin sang in the church choir. In 1864, N.Ye. Boratynsky (son of the great poet) and daughter of A. Kazembek (famous orientalist) O.A. Kazem-Bek. In 1903, the future poet Nikolai Zabolotsky was baptized in the Varvara Church.

In 1930, the temple was closed. Archpriest Nicholas was arrested and exiled to Siberia. Despite the difficult time for believers, parishioners managed to save and preserve the ancient temple icon of St. Barbarians and the image of the Myrrh-Bearing Wives from the side-altar.

In the Soviet period, the temple was given to the tram fleet for the club. Since 1963, the building of the church was used by the Kazan Institute of Chemical Technology. Its main building is nearby. A pulpit of compressors was located in the temple.

In 1994, the temple was returned to the Church. The building was damaged by heavy equipment. Major repairs have begun in it. In December 1994, on St. Great Martyr Barbara held a prayer service in the church, the first in its modern history.
