Photo and descriptionEl Veladero National Park is located south of Guerrero, in the state of Acapulco. It received the status of a national park in 1980. Its area of 3160 hectares includes the area of the Gulf of Acapulco. The park is a striking stretch of land surrounded by mountains. There are many representatives of flora and fauna under the protection of ecologists. The national park is replete with granite rocks of various sizes, on the slopes of which ancient rock paintings, images of people and animals, geometric figures and calendar records were found. The local archaeological site is considered the largest in Mexico. Some researchers attribute the archaeological excavations and drawings to the period from 200 BC. before 600 AD. One of the most interesting archaeological sites is located at an altitude of 900 m, with a rocky path leading to it. In order to avoid vandalism and robbery, this site is under the special protection of the National Institute of Anthropology and History. The road to the ancient sites takes at least about two hours. Tourists are given booklets with an explanation of each rock element. It is important to be in good physical shape, because from the very beginning of the hike the terrain is rocky and the road goes uphill. Better to stock up on water and a light snack. The mountains are mostly covered with dense jungle. The park is home to a very large number of birds. The most interesting local species - the white-tailed eagle - is a real predator, a representative of the hawk family. The fauna of El Veladero Park is represented by small animals: rabbits, shrews, skunks, hares, sometimes you can meet a coyote or deer in the park. There are many boas and iguanas. Local boas reach a length of four meters.
