Christiania Square description and photos - Norway: Oslo. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Christiania Square. Photo and descriptionChristiania Square, or Market Square, got its name in 1958 in honor of the Danish and Norwegian King Christian IV, the founder of Oslo, whose design he personally took care of. By his decision, the city was surrounded by bastions and formed a single defensive belt together with the Akershus fortress. A distinctive feature of the new city was the perpendicular layout of the streets. However, the most important and significant decision was the ban of Christian IV on the construction of wooden buildings in order to avoid the possibility of fires that could destroy the city. Christiania Square is one of the most visited tourist places in Oslo. In its very center is the famous fountain by the sculptor Gulbradsen in the form of a glove of King Christian IV, indicating the place, where the new city should be founded. Historic buildings are located here, for example, the colorful Ratman Manor (Ratman is an elected member of the magistrate), which today houses the Oslo Artists Association. Opposite is the Old Town Hall, which houses the Theater Museum and a restaurant. In 1990, after the construction of the automobile tunnel was completed, the Christiania Square from a square with eternal traffic jams turned into a quiet and cozy place with restaurant verandas inspired by the breath of the 17th century.
