The building of a real school in the city of Murom was erected in the period from 1876 to 1889 according to a plan that was sent from the Moscow educational district. The name of the architect is unknown, it was probably a project developed by a group of architects. The construction was supervised by a specialist who came from Moscow and an employee in the construction department, "a class artist of architecture" - Vasily Filippovich Afanasyev.

The idea of opening a real school in Murom arose in 1872. This, in fact, was a response to the charter of real schools approved in May 1872, which made it possible to open secondary educational institutions with a technical bias throughout the country.

Fyodor Dmitrievich Zvorykin, the official of the Murom Duma, in 1872, wrote to the Duma a statement on the need to form a gymnasium with a handicraft class in the city. As a result, the city authorities decided to open not a gymnasium, but a full-fledged real school. Murom allocated funds for its maintenance (3000 rubles annually). Before the construction of the new building, the school was located in the house of the merchant Karatygin.

The building of the real school is red brick, decorated with white decorative inserts and cornices, it is distinguished by its originality and beauty. It is also noteworthy that it is not a simple standard project - the building plan was presented at an exhibition in Paris in 1878 (this is described in a letter to the director of the school from the trustee of the district, Prince N. Meshchersky). The building contains a central section and two wings. On the ground floor, in the west wing, the director's apartment was arranged, on the east - the inspector of the educational institution. The entire second floor was dedicated to classrooms.
