Photo and description

In a small village of the Luga district of the Leningrad region called Turovo, there is the famous holy Pechersk spring. The appearance of the Pechersk spring dates back to the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when, in the summertime, one village girl grazing her cattle, by a lucky chance, was spared from the incessant encroachments of one peasant by the appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos. At the very place where the unexpected appearance of the Virgin Mary took place, a sacred spring began to break through, which soon became famous for its water with healing and life-giving properties.

Some time later, in a nearby cave, a miraculous icon of the Assumption of the Mother of God appeared, which also depicted the faces of John the Baptist, Jesus Christ and all his Apostles. In a cave, namely in a forest ravine, where the icon appeared, a chapel was built in the name of Our Lady of the Caves, which was completely built of wood. After a certain period of time, the holy icon of the Assumption of Our Lady was transferred to a new chapel. The area close to the shrine was called Malaya Pechorka. During the 17-18 centuries, the miraculous image of the Pechersk Mother of God was located in the chapel building, only in 1789 it was moved from the chapel to the village of Lugu, in which a magnificent cathedral was erected, consecrated in the name of the Great Martyr Catherine. After the icon was transferred to the cathedral, a gilded silver vest was placed on the face. Every year in the summer, after the sacred Liturgy is celebrated in Luga, held in the Resurrection Cathedral, the icon is laid with the cross procession to the place of its appearance.

It is known that that in 1851 Timofey Vlasov - a peasant from a village called Gobzhitsy, located at the Pechechitsky parish, and also a wealthy landowner Kishkina Varvara erected a new chapel in the village of Turovo, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The appearance of the new chapel was due to the fact that in 1702 the church of the same name in Turovo was dismantled. The well-known architect Pyotr Lukashevich (the designer of some buildings at the Cheremenets Monastery) undertook the development of the project for the construction of the chapel, who painstakingly worked on the design of this chapel during 1849-1850. The new project was presented as a small chapel, which was surrounded by a gallery-gulbisch around the perimeter, beautifully crowned with a hemispherical dome and a hexagon-shaped drum. The windows located on the edges of the drum especially emphasized the resemblance to the rotunda.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel on the Pechersky spring became completely unrecognizable: the roof became gable and had a completely modest small-sized dome. In addition to the celebration of the so-called "Pecherki", held every year on Friday in the first week of the great Peter Lent, there was a large procession of the cross, passing from the Smeshinskaya church and reaching the Pechersk chapel at the holy source. In the village itself, a local holiday was held, which was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in honor of the blessed memory of an ancient church that was previously located on this site.

In the 20th century, difficult trials fell on the lot of the chapel on the sacred Pechersk spring. Great damage was done originally by the communists, after which the Nazis further aggravated the position of the chapel on the sacred spring. Throughout 1996, full-scale work was carried out to restore the original appearance of the shrine located above the source.

A few years later, namely in 1999, the famous swimming pool at the holy Pechersk spring was reconstructed with donated funds from O. Melnikov. upon the provision of the necessary building material by the eminent entrepreneur Tishchenko N.M. Today, just as in the old days, there is a tradition of performing the procession on the first Friday of Peter's Great Lent, which is accompanied by a prayer service.
