Photo and description

The Natural Science Museum is located in an old building in the center of Burgas. The history of the museum complex began in 1951, when a temporary exhibition opened in Burgas. Among the 600 exhibits were minerals, fossils, birds and mammals. In 1974, as a result of an expedition to Strandzha, Sakar and the Black Sea coast, many samples of vertebrates appeared in the museum. The official opening of the artistically designed and structured exposition took place on May 23, 1985.

The collection is housed in six halls with a total area of 250 sq. meters. It contains more than 1,700 exhibits, 299 drawings and maps, 102 photographs. By studying museum exhibitions, visitors can fully get acquainted with the natural resources of the Burgas region.

The expositions in the natural science museum are divided into four sections.

The "Geology" section is devoted to the history and peculiarities of the geological development of the region. The main finds were brought from the shores of the Black Sea, from Strandja, the Eastern Balkans and the flat part of the Burgas region. At the exhibition you can see rocks and minerals of the Archean, Paleozoic and Mesozoic, rocks and fossils of the Cenozoic, about 40 species of paleontological specimens (red deer antlers, mastodon teeth, rhino jaw, etc.) and more than 25 types of soils typical for this region.

In the Botany section, samples of vegetation (including endangered and protected species) of coastal sands, wetlands and forest areas are shown. The exposition includes more than 68 plant families.

The collection "Invertebrates" contains about 1000 species of animals - protozoa, coelenterates, terrestrial, freshwater, marine and arthropod mollusks, crabs, scorpions and insects.

In the section "Vertebrates" you can see about 320 representatives of the animal world: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. All exhibits are arranged according to the principle of evolutionary development.
