Photo and description

The oldest wooden building in Oulu - the Matila House or the Seaman's House - was once known as the Limink Customs House. It was built in 1739. and up to the 80s. XVIII century was on one of the city streets. Subsequently, the house was restored and moved to the island of Pikisaari.

The Museum has been open to the public since 1989. and is a typical sailor's house of that time. Here you can get acquainted with the life and everyday life of ordinary sailors, including the life of Isaac Matila, in whose honor the museum got its name.

For example, sailors had one rather interesting tradition. In each house there were 2 porcelain figurines of dogs on the windowsill. When the owner was at home, the dogs were turned with their backs to the window, and when the owner was swimming, then the dogs looked out the window. Thus, a person passing by the house only had to look around the window to find out from a distance where the head of the family is now.

For tourists, the Museum "House of the Seafarer" opens its doors from May to September.
