Photo and description

The funicular, which is located in Odessa near the Potemkin Stairs, is another attraction of the city. After all, the history of this original form of transport reads as much as 100 years.

The first lifting cars were built in the Russian Empire in 1902. The trailers themselves could accommodate up to 35 people each, and were specially ordered and brought from France. With their help, it was possible to connect the port and the upper part of the city. The principle of operation of the funicular is very simple - when one trailer went down, it pulled the second trailer up according to the principle of a pendulum. The wagons worked regularly for 67 years, stopping only during the war or post-war devastation. In 1970, they decided to replace the funicular with the latest miracle of technology - the escalator. However, inept design and improper operation of the escalator led to the fact that it soon broke down. And there were no spare parts for its repair, and in 1997 the funicular was completely stopped.

Fortunately, the new city government was able to find funds to restore this wonderful form of transport. And in 2005, on the City Day (September 2), the renovated funicular was inaugurated, which, according to its principle of operation, is more like an elevator. Two comfortable cabins can accommodate up to 10 people each. They move slowly up and down, and through their large panoramic windows, an excellent view opens up. The upper and lower stations are built in a modern style.

Anyone can ride the funicular, paying only 2 hryvnia. Interestingly, as a rule, down the carriage goes empty (after all, you can enjoy the descent and the Potemkin stairs). But a large queue is lining up.
