Belomorsk Regional Museum of Local Lore “Belomorsk Petroglyphs” was created thanks to a group of enthusiasts who were busy creating a public history and local history museum in Belomorsk. Thanks to the vigorous activity of this group, in 1961 the first exposition was opened in the museum.

Under the leadership of Yu. A. Savvateev, archaeologists in the Belomorsk region in 1963 and 1965 found a large number of rock carvings - petroglyphs. They were created about 6 thousand years ago in the Neolithic era by ancient fishermen and hunters. During the years of this discovery, the construction of a protective pavilion began over the group of rock inscriptions "Demon Tracks" discovered by AM Linevsky. In 1968, construction was completed and a small exhibition was opened, which was dedicated to archaeological finds and monuments of Karelia. It was this year that the Museum got its name - “White Sea Petroglyphs”.
