Photo and description

The temple ensemble of Red Square, dating from the 18th-19th centuries, is located in Shlisselburg. It consists of the Annunciation Cathedral, the Nicholas Church and the Kazan Chapel. In 1995, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin classified this complex as a cultural heritage site of federal (all-Russian) significance.

On the site of the present stone Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, there was a wooden church built in 1702 by order of Emperor Peter I. The building stood for about two decades, and was dismantled in 1725. A new wooden church was built in 1728, but it burned down in 1756. On the site of the wooden church in 1764, a new stone building of the temple was erected at the expense of the patrons of the arts Sibilev and Belov, who were later buried here. In 1778 a bell tower was added to the church. During the Second World War, the church was seriously damaged, the roof and the spire of the bell tower were completely destroyed.

In 1935, the Annunciation Church was closed and taken away from the believers. It was adapted for household needs. In the period from 1941 to 1943, divine services were held here, but the church was never returned to the believers. Only in 1990 did this happen. Since 1991, regular services and restoration work have been conducted in the Annunciation Cathedral, which have not been completed to date.

Next to the cathedral there is a church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Initially, a wooden church was built on the site of the present temple in 1737-1739, which, based on information from the chronicle, was moved to the village of Gavsar. However, a stone building was erected on this site in 1770, which has survived to this day.

Divine services in the church were held until 1933. Then the state took it away from the believers, and the temple began to be used for other purposes. In 1995 it was returned to the Orthodox. The temple was restored, repaired, and regular services began to be held here.

Currently, the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is in excellent condition. The building is white and blue, the walls are plastered, the white columns are decorated with stucco. The roof, drum, dome and dome are finished with galvanized sheet iron. The poppy is made in the shape of an onion, painted in a blue tone.

The chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was built in 1864. Re-consecrated in 1989. Currently it is active. Divine services are held according to a special schedule.

The territory of the Annunciation Cathedral and the Nikolskaya Church is common. There are antique styled lanterns here.
