Photo and descriptionThe main cathedral of the Diocese of Veracruz was consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Locals call it the temple of the Virgin Mary Asuncion. This majestic cathedral with one of its facades overlooks Via Mario Molina, and the other overlooks the central square of the city, called Zocalo. The temple received the status of a cathedral after the establishment of the local diocese - in 1963. The construction of this temple began at the beginning of the 17th century and lasted until 1731, which is considered the date of the appearance of the cathedral in the Old City of Veracruz. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was modernized. To the right of the entrance, the church is decorated with a high tower with a small dome, which was erected at the beginning of the 20th century. The five-aisled cathedral, as a result of several reconstructions, was decorated in a neoclassical manner. It is crowned with an octagonal dome. The main entrance to the temple is arched. It is framed by lateral columns supporting the cornice. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with several stucco medallions, large windows and the image of the Mother of God - the patroness of the temple. The interior of the cathedral is not splendid. In the forefront are sumptuous baccarat crystal chandeliers and the main altar. They are located directly opposite the entrance. The local temple received these items as a gift from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Asuncion has several chapels dedicated to a number of saints. From 2008 to 2013, the Cathedral of Veracruz was closed for renovation. Its facades were returned to white. The restorers have also restored the dome. Currently, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is open to everyone.
