Photo and description

The Church of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad is Spanish for the Church of Our Lady of Solitude. The cathedral is one of the few Christian churches of its kind in all of Latin America. The temple was built more than three hundred years ago and has retained its majestic appearance to this day. The temple is located in the city of Oaxaca, in the south of Mexico.

The construction of the cathedral began in 1682, and in 1690 the temple was consecrated. The church was built under the leadership of Fernando Mendes. The facade was built between 1717 and 1718 with the assistance of Bishop Maldonado Frescoes. The sculptures of saints made of wood and plaster, a beautiful marble font and, of course, the statue of Our Lady attract special attention of tourists.

The Virgin of Solitude is the patron saint of Oaxaca. Her statue in the Church of Nuestra Senora de los Soledad is adorned with 600 diamonds and a 4-pound gold crown framed with diamonds, the Virgin's robe covered with pearls. In the 1980s, the jeweled crown was stolen. Today the head of the statue is covered with a replica of it. Locals go to the temple to pray in front of the image of the Virgin, confident that she is able to heal.

There are many restaurants in the Cathedral Square where you can relax and eat. And for lovers of trinkets, there is a handicraft market nearby where you can buy souvenirs.

The cathedral is not only a national historical monument of Mexico, but also a place of pilgrimage for believers from many countries.
