Old and New Town Halls (Altes Rathaus und Neues Rathaus) description and photos - Germany: Hannover. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Altes Rathaus und Neues Rathaus. Photo and descriptionThe Old Town Hall was built in the 15th century, but was partially destroyed and replaced by a 19th century building in the style of Italian romanticism. However, as a result of restoration work, the building was returned to its historical appearance. Of particular value are the building's pediment, decorated with Gothic phials, and a stucco frieze, which displays portraits of princes and family coats of arms, as well as paintings of medieval folk games. Hannover is dominated by the imposing New Town Hall in the Baroque style, built in 1901-1913. The building was erected on the banks of an artificial lake and rests on 3,026 beech piles. The numerous bas-reliefs that adorn the town hall building depict scenes from the history of the city. The Conference Room contains a huge painting by Ferdinand Hodler, Unity, depicting the city's adoption of Protestantism in 1533. A unique inclined elevator takes tourists to the dome of the town hall, to the observation deck, from where a magnificent view of the city opens.
