Photo and descriptionThe Archaeological Museum in Hisar was founded in 1933. This year the Archaeological Society was founded in Hisarya in order to preserve the cultural monuments of the city. Reserve General Todor Markov was elected to the post of chairman of this organization. In the same year, he opened an archaeological exhibition in his own villa. In 1953, Todor Markov presented his collection of exhibits to the city. This collection became the basis of the Archaeological Museum that opened in Hisar. A scientific group was created, which took up archaeological excavations in the city. As a result, most of the buildings of the ancient city were discovered: residential buildings, baths, a fortress wall. Since 1955, the museum has moved to the building in which it is located to this day. After expansion in 1976, an ethnographic exhibition appeared in it, which acquaints visitors with the peculiarities of the life and lifestyle of the local population. Among the exhibits you can see examples of traditional costumes, dishes, tools, jewelry, etc. Today the Archaeological Museum houses five exhibition halls, a lapidarium and a courtyard. The main exposition presents objects of the Neolithic, Antique and Thracian periods. Part of the museum is an archaeological reserve - an open-air area with ruins of ancient buildings. The lapidarium contains samples of ancient writing on stone slabs, including on tombstones.
